Obama vs. Hillary

The most recent fight over Obama's statement in the last debate that he would meet with world leaders without reservations and Hillary's campaign attack, actually make me like Obama more than before. I have always been worried about Obama's ability to take a punch and hit back. Hillary's people if nothing else will be tough. My first priority in picking a candidate is that they cannot whither while under attack. The ideals of our party must be aggressively defended.

In the end, I like Hillary, but I would prefer any number of the other candidates. The fact that the Obama campaign is holding its own is a good sign.

On that note, please come and vote on which candidate you think is best for Arizona...

I'm a Democratic stalwart from Tempe who's been pulling the lever for Democratic Presidential candidates since Humphrey in 1968-- that's 10 straight elections in which I've proudly supported the Democratic Party's candidate for the White House.

But I will never cast a vote for Hillary Clinton.

I have never, in all these decades, seen a Democrat so disingenuous, so transparently offensive, so insulting to the very things that made me a Democrat in the first place, as Hillary has shown herself to be.

Her backing of the Iraq War is bad enough and I won't beat that dead horse here-- she knew what we were getting into in 2002, certainly in the years after that, and she continued to support this catastrophe.

But Hillary has arrogantly been working against the rights of American workers and for big American corporations for years now. She supported that horrible bill to restructure Chapter 11, which imposes extra conditions and makes it more difficult for workers to get protection from creditors if they have an illness or are injured.

She supports outsourcing of US jobs to India and other places when we're hurting as never before for economic security.

She arrogantly attacks her fellow Democrats, like John Kerry before when she purposefully misconstrued a statement he had made, and Obama today.

She is totally unacceptable to me and to most of my family, also staunch Democrats for the most part.

There are dozens of people in my extended family, the vast majority Democrats, and most of us won't vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton, period. Even if it means a Republican in the White House in 2008-- that just means we'll have a chance to elect a progressive Democrat in 2012, when the country will indeed be utterly exhausted with Republican misrule.

In fact, Hillary is consistently the worst candidate for the Democrats in polls against Republicans for 2008-- she fares poorly, while John Edwards and particularly Barack Obama do quite well. Considering that many Democrats even in my Democratic family would sit out the election, vote 3rd Party or even considering voting for the Republicans in 2008 if Hillary were nominated, you can see the depth of the anger at her and at her policy stands, which have done so much damage.

I'm supporting Barack Obama now-- I didn't initially, my first choice has been Bill Richardson, but I'm now firmly in the Obama camp. He's shown himself to be smart, charismatic and also very tough as you also recognize. And I'm tired of this bull about him being inexperienced-- he has more electoral experience than Hillary Clinton does, starting in the Illinois State House as he has, and unlike Hillary, Obama has opposed Iraq from the start.

Thus, Obama has also shown foresight and just plain good sense. The Democratic Party needs to avoid doing the stupid thing and nominating Hillary Clinton. There are many other Democrats who would fare better, with far fewer negatives and much better grass-roots support-- and people for whom we could bring ourselves to vote, moreover.

I have some of the same misgivings about Hillary. First and foremost, I am uncomfortable with two families controlling the presidency for 6 or 7 terms.

However, I would vote for any of our candidates. I think Hillary would do a reasonably good job, but your point and concerns are well taken and understandable. I think that despite how smart and capable Hillary is, she is ultimately divisive.
