Using Pictures on the Blog...

Does anyone have information on a legal way to post pictures related to stories? I would like to spruce things up a bit by including video and pictures occasionally. Any ideas?

I'm no lawyer, but I'm almost positive that anything you might post would be covered by fair use... as long as the image itself isn't copyrighted. Anything you find on youtube is covered under their license, so don't worry about re-posting their videos. If they find it violates a copyright, they'll delete it.

I guess my concern is know what picture are copyrighted. Is there is a service that only does public domain pictures?

Thanks...

I think you're covered under fair use even if it is copyrighted. Check out the fair use wiki if you're worried about it. If you still want to stick to 100% free use images, check some stock photo sites like freestockphotos.com or pay services like bigstock.com and istock.com

Look at sites listed under the Creative Commons website (Creativecommons.org) Since you are not making a profit, just about everything licensed under CC is usable.

If you are concerned about copyright, you can always ask permission if you can find the original owner. Otherwise just cite the source of the image.

picsforlearning.com has thousands of generic photos for non profit use.

Also, anything from an official government website, such as photos of politicians are in the public domain.

I post images profusely and without reservation. Your first line of protection is staying free of content that generates income.

If you take the image from another Web site, the image has been published. CNN will not sue you for taking their photos even when copyrighted.

The most aggressive are the stock image web sites that sell images. They try to stamp overlays to discourage use, but even they know they have minimal recourse against a non financial blog.

You're quite safe so long as you don't make money and don't claim authorship or attempt to copyright the image as your own.

Even professional artists who have online galleries don't sue blogs for posting their photos. It might actually increase business.

Which brings me to the key legal question: Are you harming their business by impacting sales (the whole Napster thing) or using their material for profit without permission?

There are lots of places that sell fantastic images, usually for just a few dollars.

Hope that helps.

- so if i have adsense on my blog,
does that automatically mean that if i rip off other peoples posted pictures, then it is "for profit"?
